Waiting for Engineering
The LPA is still waiting for engineering specifications and cost estimates for options on repairing a portion of the berm between the emergency spillway and the concrete spillway on the Lake Panorama Dam. Soil engineering reports were delayed to the Construction engineers, Shive-Hattery, in Des Moines. They now have the reports and will produce the recommendations for the February board meeting on the 28th.
Board Considers Lobbyist
Discussions at the LPA informational meeting in January have led the Board of Directors to consider obtaining a lobbyist for work with the Iowa legislature and other agencies. Complicated and far reaching legislation can impact the lake in many ways, whether it is concerning water quality, environmental regulations, wastewater regulations, real estate taxation or any other of a number of areas of interest.
Kite Tubes banned
A new device that is pulled behind a boat but can actually fly through the air for a short while has been banned by the LPA Board of Directors. Unlike skis or wakeboards, that come down fairly quickly, the "kite tube" may stay in the air for several seconds. This is determined to be a safety hazard on our narrow lake and it, like parasails, etc. is now banned. Loss of control of such an object in tight quarters could create serious accident and injury.
Assessment Statements Out March 1
Traditionally, dues and assessments have been sent out February 1 and are due by April 1. The LPA office will be sending them March 1st this year for the April 1 due date. The LPA Board of Directors has adopted a 5% increase, as approved by the membership in their vote on the by-laws in 2004.
