Fire Hydrants to be Flushed in Late October, Early November
The Water Company plans to flush the water distribution system using the fire hydrants the last week of October and the first week in November. Flushing is done to remove particulates and deposits that accumulate in the pipes. Some discoloration and sediment may be stirred up by the activity.
Discoloration caused by Manganese compounds from the Dakota wells will be taken care of as soon as Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials approve the system changes required.
Informational Meeting Well Attended
The informational meeting held September 30 had about 150 in attendance. They heard from General Manager John Rutledge of the list of major projects and cost estimates for those projects. The LPA Board continues to work on the proposal to be presented to the members that will provide financing for the projects.
Lake to be lowered 1 foot in early November
The Lake will be lowered approximately 1 foot during the first week in November for gate, gate cylinders, and spillway inspection. Providing there are adequate flows in the river, the level should return to normal, but that is not guaranteed. Boats should be off lifts and docks removed from shallow areas before that time.
New dam gate controls have been installed at the facility. The new controls replace some of the original wiring, switches, and control panels with updated systems.
Construction Building Inspection Coming for 2008
Building inspections will be mandatory in 2008 through action taken at the LPA Board Meetings in July and August. One more reading is needed for approval of the plan that will require owners to have certified inspectors to make periodic inspections during construction and report the results to the LPA and the owner. The inspections will be required on homes, additions of any kind, and detached garages within 6 feet of a home.
The Planning and Building Codes Committee is recommending that only those certified by the International Codes Council, architects and construction engineers with experience, and building codes administration people with ten years experience be allowed to do the inspections. The owner will make the contacts and pay for the service. The LPA will require verification of the experience and credentials of the inspectors as well as the presence of insurance coverage.
Burning Should Be Monitored
Member owners at Lake Panorama may burn anything that grows on their lots--leaves, branches, weeds, etc. Burning must be attended according to LPA regulations. Always check the forecast for wind conditions before burning.
Burning on the seal coat is prohibited. Burning in ditches on hills is not recommended.
Firewood Available
Members may cut dead trees on LPA land with permission from the office--and confirmation that the property belongs to LPA. Members may also cut dead trees on private land with the permission of the property owner.
Trees cut on LPA land should be essentially completely removed.
Contact the office for details.
